On March 9, 2025, the 9th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival officially took place, with roads leading to the center of Dak Lak province packed with vehicles as locals from the Central Highlands and Ho Chi Minh City flocked to the event. While Nguyen Dinh Chieu road remained much the same as any other day, at the end of the road lay a hidden treasure—a collection of classic cars sheltered under tarps, alongside the gentle pitter-patter of raindrops.

Unlike previous years, where SUV displays took center stage at the Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, this year, Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu opted to showcase his vehicles at the Coffee World Museum. Over the years, this museum has become a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Buon Ma Thuot, alongside iconic landmarks such as the tank statue and Phan Dinh Giot street.

The museum played host to a remarkable collection of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, with a combined value of nearly 80 billion VND. As the writer arrived, the evening drew close to 9 pm, and some of the cars were already tucked away for the night, sheltered under their protective tarps. Earlier in the day, a gentle rain had passed through Buon Ma Thuot, necessitating the covering of fabric-topped cars like the Mercedes-Benz 190SL. Despite the late hour, the classic car collection continued to captivate the attention of foreign tourists who had been savoring their aromatic cups of coffee within the museum.

These visitors were awe-struck by the unique models on display, including the 190SL, 230SL, and 250SL. Their admiration only grew upon learning that the owner of this extraordinary collection possessed over 700 automobiles, including hundreds of supercars and hypercars. However, at the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival, he chose not to steal the spotlight, opting instead to showcase only his classic cars, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the vibrant festival atmosphere.

Among the Mercedes-Benz models on display, the 190SL and 280SL stood out for their distinctive features. The 190SL, with its sleek and elegant lines, is a true classic, while the 280SL boasts a unique high and square-shaped roof, earning it the affectionate nickname of “temple roof.” Additionally, the 280SL incorporates aluminum body parts, such as the hood and doors, to reduce weight.

As one of the products of the Mercedes-Benz W113 series, the 280 SL was the third model to be introduced, following the 230 SL and 250 SL. It made its debut in December 1967 and continued production until February 23, 1971, when it was replaced by the significantly heavier 350 SL.

Bidding farewell to Buon Ma Thuot 2025 and its inaugural display of classic cars, one can’t help but feel a tinge of regret. The addition of a Mercedes-Benz SLS to the collection would have been the proverbial cherry on top. However, the owner of this extraordinary assemblage has his own plans, and we can only await the next supercar event with bated breath, hoping to catch a glimpse of “Qua” Vu’s most prestigious vehicles stretching for kilometers.
