In a recent announcement, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that it will not be developing a new generation of its A-Class hatchback, the only model of its kind in their lineup.
This decision by the German luxury carmaker is driven by a strategic focus on SUVs and crossovers with global appeal.
A-Class has historically been positioned as the entry-level model in the Mercedes-Benz range, offering some of the most affordable options in their portfolio. The A-Class has evolved through four generations, introduced in 1997, 2004, 2012, and 2018, respectively. The first two iterations belonged to the subcompact urban car segment and featured a minivan-like design, while the latter two adopted a hatchback style with larger dimensions.
With the discontinuation of the A-Class, Mercedes-Benz’s compact car offerings will include the CLA (available as a sedan and shooting brake), along with the GLA and GLB SUVs in their newest iterations. Additionally, electric SUV models like the EQA and EQB will be integrated into the GLA and GLB lineups, respectively, with a unified design approach that removes the “EQ” suffix.
