Mazda is set to introduce its new Skyactiv-Z gasoline engine with the next-generation CX-5, expected to launch in late 2027, the Japanese manufacturer revealed.
The Skyactiv-Z engine will comply with Euro 7 emissions regulations in Europe as well as LEV 4/Tier 4 in the US, and it will use fewer electronic control units – less than half the current number and with reduced control software.
News of the Skyactiv-Z engine first emerged in November last year when Mazda stated that the engine would employ a ‘lambda one’ combustion method, alluding to the perfect balance of air and fuel during combustion.
Mazda will reduce its investment in electrification from 2 trillion yen ($15.1 billion) to around 1.5 trillion yen ($11.3 billion) by optimizing investments, such as for batteries. As a result, the investment for battery procurement is expected to be halved from the initial 750 billion yen ($19.1 billion).
Meanwhile, for battery-electric vehicles, Mazda expects to reduce investment in BEV development by 40% and development manpower by 50% “compared to conventional development through collaboration and partnerships,” Mazda said.
Mazda has been collaborating with other manufacturers to develop EV technology, such as Toyota and Changan, the latter of which will launch the Mazda 6e – known as the EZ-6 in China – and later, a fully Mazda-developed electric vehicle. Mazda stated that this EV will be produced in Japan and targeted at the global market.
