According to leaks from South Korea, the sixth-generation Kia Sportage is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2027 and will solely feature hybrid powertrains, completely phasing out traditional internal combustion engine options.
The Korean Car Blog, a reputable source from South Korea, reports that the next-generation Kia Sportage will transition entirely to a hybrid configuration. Pure gasoline or diesel engine versions will be discontinued due to their inability to meet future emissions and fuel economy standards, which are becoming increasingly stringent.
Buyers of the new Kia Sportage will have two powertrain choices: a conventional hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The PHEV version is expected to offer an all-electric range of up to 100 km thanks to its larger battery capacity. The sixth-generation Kia Sportage’s hybrid powertrain is rumored to employ new technology, improving both performance and fuel efficiency compared to the current model.
However, Kia is unlikely to develop an all-electric (EV) version of the Sportage. This decision stems from the slower-than-expected sales growth of electric vehicles in this segment, and Kia already has a competitive EV portfolio, including the EV6. Introducing a Sportage EV could potentially cannibalize sales of their existing electric offerings.
At present, there are no specific details available regarding the chassis, interior, or exterior design of the new Sportage. The current platform may be retained but is expected to undergo significant upgrades. In terms of exterior styling, the vehicle is anticipated to undergo noticeable changes to align with Kia’s modern design language.
The 2027 Kia Sportage’s interior may feature larger screens, more advanced software systems, and subtle design refinements. However, the potential for a significant breakthrough in the cabin is relatively low. The overall dimensions of the vehicle are expected to increase slightly, providing a more spacious and comfortable experience for occupants.
The Sportage is Kia’s best-selling model in North America and Europe, playing a pivotal role in the company’s global strategy. In 2024, this SUV accounted for sales of 587,717 units, representing nearly 20% of Kia’s total worldwide sales.
