Mazda plans to discontinue four models, including the Mazda2 sedan, Mazda6, MX-30, and CX-3, replacing them with a new line-up of electric vehicles.
Mazda is reshaping its brand future with the new generation CX-5 and a hybrid sports car, while phasing out the Mazda2, CX-3, Mazda6, and MX-30 by the end of 2025. However, the discontinuation may happen market-by-market rather than a global simultaneous exit, as some of these models still hold appeal in certain regions despite lackluster sales in many other places.
For instance, the Mazda2 has recorded steady sales in Vietnam. In 2024, this model sold a significant number, ranking just behind the Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Hyundai Accent in the B-segment sedan category. Nonetheless, Mazda is considering replacing these familiar lines with newer, more market-trend-appropriate products.
The first model likely to be discontinued is the MX-30 – Mazda’s first electric car. Expected to halt production in March 2025, the MX-30 failed to make a mark due to its high price and limited range, making it difficult to compete. Despite being on the market for just five years, this model hasn’t received a mid-life upgrade or a second generation. However, the extended-range version, the MX-30 e-SkyActiv R-EV, will continue production.
Next is the Mazda2 – the small hatchback launched in 2014 and upgraded in 2019, 2023, and 2024 – which also faces a production halt. In the small sedan/hatchback segment, the Mazda2 seems to have lost its competitive edge against rivals. There is no clear information about a direct replacement, but Mazda has trademarked the name “Mazda 2e,” hinting at a potential affordable electric model in the future. In Europe, customers can opt for the Mazda2 Hybrid, which is essentially a rebadged Toyota Yaris.
The Mazda CX-3, a small CUV introduced in 2014 and upgraded in 2018, will discontinue in September 2025. While still sold in Japan and some Asian markets like Vietnam, the CX-3 has been discontinued in North America and Europe due to poor sales. However, Mazda is developing a replacement small SUV, inspired by the CX-5. Expected to be named CX-20, this model will be produced in Thailand, but its launch timing and distribution markets remain undisclosed.
Lastly, the Mazda6 sedan, introduced in 2012, is also facing the axe. Despite multiple upgrades, the Mazda6 has lost its allure and has been discontinued in North America (2021), the UK (2023), Japan (2024), and recently, Australia, due to failing to meet new regulations. In Vietnam, in 2024, only 612 units were sold. Nonetheless, the Mazda6 will have a successor in the Mazda 6e – an electric vehicle based on the Changan platform, already launched in China as the EZ-6 with two electric motor options and a range-extending rotary engine. It also appeared at the Bangkok International Motor Show 2025 but without an official release date.
