**Xiaomi Makes a Splash in the Electric Vehicle Market**

Xiaomi, the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer, is making waves with its aggressive expansion into the electric vehicle market.

After 15 years of success in smartphones, home appliances, and smart devices, Xiaomi officially entered the automotive industry in 2024 with the launch of its SU7 sedan. Just a year later, the SU7 outsold the Tesla Model 3 in China as of December 2024, marking a significant turning point for the emerging EV brand.

Xiaomi further bolstered its presence in the market with the recent release of the SU7 Ultra sports version in February. According to Chairman Lu Weibing, the company plans to expand internationally by 2027. To realize its vision of becoming a global EV powerhouse, Xiaomi has been actively recruiting talent from established automotive giants, particularly those based in Germany.

Xiaomi has attracted a series of seasoned experts from BMW and Rolls-Royce to join its electric vehicle development team. Notably, Mr. Rudolf Dittrich, with 15 years of experience at BMW and a background in motorsports with Williams and Sauber F1, has been appointed as the director of Xiaomi’s research and development (R&D) center in Europe. While the specific location of this center has not yet been disclosed, LinkedIn reveals that Xiaomi is actively hiring in Munich, Germany—the cradle of European automotive engineering.

In addition to Mr. Dittrich, Xiaomi has also onboarded Mr. Dusan Sarac, formerly of BMW and Rolls-Royce, and Mr. Jannis Hellwig, a high-performance product development engineer. The company aims to recruit at least five more leaders from BMW to strengthen its R&D capabilities. Furthermore, Xiaomi is seeking design and powertrain engineers to be based in Munich.

This year, Xiaomi will introduce the YU7 electric SUV, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, which currently dominates the global electric SUV segment. Xiaomi has set an ambitious target of selling 350,000 electric vehicles in China in 2025. If achieved, this number would surpass the combined EV sales of Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche in 2024. This goal is particularly remarkable given that Xiaomi has only been producing the SU7 for a year. However, with 200,000 units already sold and the recent launch of the SU7 Ultra, Xiaomi is well-positioned to reach this milestone.
