The $3 million Bugatti Chiron was seized by police for speeding and may be auctioned off.
A 38-year-old driver in Austria paid a hefty price for speeding in a Bugatti Chiron – a multimillion-dollar supercar – at 123 km/h on Ringstrasse, the beltway encircling Vienna. The speed limit on this stretch is set at 60 km/h, and the incident, reported by Heute, highlights the severity of Austrian traffic laws and their enforcement.
The incident, which took place near the Parliament building, led to the police promptly intercepting the vehicle. The driver immediately tried to excuse himself, stating, “This isn’t my car, officer,” and claiming that the Bugatti Chiron belonged to a friend. However, this familiar plea did not spare him from the consequences. The police impounded the supercar, had it towed away from the scene, and also revoked the man’s driver’s license.
Austria is known for its stringent traffic regulations, especially since the enactment of new laws in 2024 to address speeding offenses. According to these laws, vehicles traveling more than 60 km/h over the speed limit may be subject to confiscation. In this case, the Bugatti Chiron was clocked at 63 km/h above the limit, making its seizure unavoidable.
Some argue that the Austrian authorities have been overly harsh in confiscating such an expensive megacar. However, this is not the first time the country has taken such stringent action. The Austrian government often auctions off confiscated vehicles as a deterrent and punishment for speeding. However, if the driver was not the actual owner of the Bugatti, the situation may become more complex in terms of legal proceedings. The outcome of this particular case remains to be seen.
The seized vehicle is a standard Chiron model, equipped with a W16 8.0-liter engine that produces a staggering 1,479 horsepower and 1,600 Nm of torque. This supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.4 seconds and reach 400 km/h in 32.6 seconds – figures that showcase its incredible performance. When it was first introduced, the Bugatti Chiron had a starting price of around $3 million, solidifying its status as a global supercar icon.
Despite their exceptional speed capabilities, supercars like the Bugatti Chiron often find themselves constrained by traffic laws, as this incident in Vienna serves as a reminder. It stands as a warning to thrill-seekers who wish to showcase their powerful machines’ prowess on public streets.
