Chery Group brought a range of vehicles to the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), among which the most notable was the Jaecoo J5 EV. This compact SUV, first introduced in October 2024, now features an all-electric variant.
Following its debut in Indonesia, the Jaecoo J5 EV has made its way to Thailand.
The Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to retain the same dimensions as its combustion engine counterpart. If so, it will measure 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. These dimensions place it firmly in the B-segment SUV category.
The Jaecoo J5 EV boasts a significantly different design compared to its combustion engine version, particularly at the front. The characteristic Jaecoo waterfall grille has been replaced by a transparent strip bearing the “Jaecoo” lettering, seamlessly connected to the slender rectangular headlights, creating a minimalist yet modern aesthetic.

Below, this electric SUV features a large rectangular air intake with perforated inserts, body-colored, paired with a simple lower air intake. The design of the Jaecoo J5 EV offers a refreshing take, moving away from the increasingly aggressive styling trends seen in many modern vehicles.
However, the overall design of the Jaecoo J5 EV still draws influences from the luxury SUV, the Range Rover Evoque, with its clamshell hood, simple side body lines, full-width LED taillights, large rear spoiler, and black diffuser.

Departing from other Jaecoo models, the J5 EV employs traditional door handles instead of flush-mounted ones. Additionally, the A-pillars are not black, which helps distinguish it from Land Rover SUVs.

The interior of the Jaecoo J5 EV embraces minimalism, featuring a waterfall dashboard that integrates a vertically oriented 13.2-inch infotainment screen and a steering wheel shared with the Omoda C9. Physical buttons are kept to a minimum, with only three for drive mode selection, warning lights, and door locks. This frees up space in the central control area, allowing Chery to include two smart phone chargers, two cup holders, and an open storage compartment underneath.

Jaecoo promotes the J5 EV as a “pet-friendly” SUV. To achieve this, it offers extended seats for enhanced pet comfort, a powerful air filter to capture pet hair, a smart air conditioning system, and antibacterial equipment to inhibit bacterial growth. The brand will also provide pet accessories such as feeders and small pet steps.

Additionally, the J5 EV is designed with outdoor enthusiasts in mind, offering a towing capacity of up to 1,250 kg, a 75 kg load-bearing roof rack, a charging port, luggage hooks in the trunk, and a multi-purpose camping light. Its panoramic sunroof, spanning 1.45 square meters, is claimed to be the largest in its class.

Interestingly, the Jaecoo J5 EV features a completely different powertrain compared to its larger sibling, the J6. While the J6 offers rear-wheel or all-wheel drive options, the J5 EV is front-wheel drive only. It is equipped with a single electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 211 horsepower (155 kW) and 288 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
Despite being a smaller vehicle with a lower battery capacity of 60.9 kWh compared to the J6, the Jaecoo J5 EV boasts an impressive range of 470 km according to the NEDC standard, surpassing the J6’s 426 km. When considering the more realistic WLTP standard, the J5 EV is expected to achieve a range of around 400 km, while the rear-wheel-drive J6 manages 371 km. The Jaecoo J5 EV is predicted to utilize BYD’s Blade lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery.
The Jaecoo J5 EV is capable of covering 400 km on a single charge, as per European standards.
The launch date and pricing for the Jaecoo J5 EV in the Thai market have not yet been disclosed. However, it is expected to enter the Malaysian market in the fourth quarter of this year or early 2026. There is a strong possibility that the vehicle will be assembled at the Shah Alam plant in Malaysia, alongside other Jaecoo models, to take advantage of tax incentives over the next few years. In addition to Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, the Jaecoo J5 EV may also be available in Vietnam.
