BYD recently unveiled its Shark 6 pickup truck at the Bangkok Motor Show, with a price tag of 1,699,000 Thai Baht (approximately $50,000).

The vehicle is built on BYD’s DMO platform and features a body-on-frame construction with independent double-wishbone suspension at the front and rear.

BYD Introduces the Shark 6 Pickup in Asean – Will It Make Its Way to Vietnam?

Its dimensions include a length of 5,457 mm, a width of 1,917 mm, and a height of 1,925 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. These measurements make the Shark 6 larger than the Ford Ranger, one of the best-selling pickup trucks in Thailand. The Shark 6 has already been sold in various countries, including Mexico, Australia, and Brazil. In some countries, it is known simply as the Shark, without the ‘6’ in its name.

The BYD Shark 6 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with two permanent magnet synchronous motors. However, the engine only serves as a generator to charge the batteries and provide power to the motors.

The combined output of the two motors is an impressive 321 kW (430 hp) and 650 Nm of torque, enabling the Shark 6 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. This is a remarkable feat for a heavy-duty pickup weighing 2,710 kg. The vehicle is powered by a 29.58 kWh blade battery, offering a combined range of 800 km.

BYD is not the first Chinese brand to introduce a pickup truck in Thailand. GWM launched the Poer Sahar in 2024, offering three variants: Ultra 4WD, Pro, and Single Cab. All variants feature an HEV system, comprising a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor.

The engine produces 182 kW (244 hp) and 380 Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds 79 kW (106 hp) and 268 Nm. The Poer Sahar is priced between 1,129,000 and 1,389,000 Thai Baht (approximately $33,200 to $40,900).

Thailand is the second-largest market for pickup trucks globally, after the United States. This is largely due to the government’s initial tax policies and the demand for versatile vehicles. Diesel engines were once favored due to low fuel prices and the high torque output of these engines.

Before Chinese brands entered the Thai market, Japanese models such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton dominated the mid to low-end pickup truck segment, while American models like the Ford Ranger held a strong presence in the mid to high-end segment.
