In recent years, the urban SUV segment has been a race between formidable gasoline-powered contenders, both old and new, from Japan and South Korea. This includes models such as the Mitsubishi Xforce (599-680 million VND), Honda HR-V (699-871 million VND), Toyota Yaris Cross (650-765 million VND), Hyundai Creta (599-699 million VND), and the Kia Seltos (599-799 million VND).
When it comes to Chinese offerings, two notable competitors were the MG ZS (624-739 million VND) and the Beijing X7 (from 678 million VND). Stepping into 2024, this segment becomes even more crowded with the introduction of new models from Chinese automakers such as the BYD Dolphin (659 million VND) and the Omoda C5 (589-669 million VND), with the Geely Coolray soon to join the fray.
Among the Chinese contenders, the two most recently introduced models, the Coolray and the C5, are expected to give a tough competition to their Korean and Japanese rivals in terms of sales. In international markets such as Thailand and Malaysia, the Geely Coolray and Omoda C5 have created an intriguing two-horse race within the B-segment SUV category.
At a price point of around 600 million VND, the flagship versions of both models bear the name ‘Flagship’. So, how do the C5 Flagship and Coolray Flagship stack up against their Korean and Japanese rivals in the same price range?
Omoda C5: Youthful Appeal
In terms of design, both models represent the previous generation compared to the current versions available in international markets. However, their exterior details still showcase distinct design languages. The Omoda C5 captivates the attention of younger customers with its modern design, featuring a frameless grille and stylized T-shaped LED lights.

On the other hand, the Geely Coolray exudes a more ‘American’ style. Its grille design might remind you of SUVs from Ford or Chevrolet, with a red-trimmed grille and old-style full LED daytime running lights.
In the Flagship variant, both models come equipped with full LED headlights, electrically adjustable and foldable mirrors, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Omoda C5’s wheel design, with its red-accented sporty rims, caters to those who prefer a dynamic look, while the Geely Coolray’s spear-shaped rims give it a bolder appearance. The most noticeable difference between the two versions lies at the rear.
The Omoda C5’s coupe-style rear features a small-sized ‘duck tail’ spoiler and a sleek LED light bar that connects the taillights. This design approach is commonly seen in contemporary Chinese SUVs. In contrast, the Coolray Flagship’s rear end stands out with its prominent sports spoiler and separated taillights joined by a chrome strip. Unfortunately, the Coolray’s trunk in the high-end version is manually operated, unlike the Omoda C5’s electric trunk.
