Leaked Photos Reveal the Mini Land Rover Defender During Testing
According to plans, the compact Defender mini SUV is expected to make its global debut in 2027 with the model year 2028. This expansion of the Defender range is a logical step for JLR, strengthening its most powerful sub-brand.
Compared to the current Land Rover Defender, this miniaturized version is significantly more compact, similar in size to the Skoda Kodiaq or Hyundai Santa Fe. However, it retains the Defender’s signature design elements, including a wide body, flared fenders, a square rear end, and an elongated hood. Notable changes include a steeper windshield, sleeker headlights, and a forward-leaning C-pillar, resulting in a more modern and dynamic appearance.
The “Mini Defender” is built on the all-new EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform, specifically developed by JLR for upcoming pure electric vehicles like the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, and Discovery Sport. The EMA platform supports 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling super-fast charging with a maximum power output of 350 kW, allowing a full charge in under 18 minutes.
The Land Rover Defender mini is expected to be manufactured at JLR’s Halewood plant in Merseyside, Northwest England. The batteries will be supplied from a new production facility in Somerset, aligning with JLR’s large-scale electrification strategy.
While JLR has not officially announced the name of the new electric SUV, speculations suggest it could be called the Defender 80 or Defender Sport. The latter seems more plausible, as the company has previously used the “Sport” suffix for the Discovery Sport, and the prototype’s design also shares some similarities with that model, including character lines and the inclined C-pillar.
Although it is too early to confirm specific equipment or pricing details, many anticipate that the “Mini Defender” will be significantly more affordable than the standard Defender, thus broadening the target audience for the Defender brand.
