As we move into 2025, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has raised the bar significantly with its updated safety testing criteria.

This has resulted in a notable decrease in the number of vehicles qualifying for the Top Safety Pick award, with only 48 models meeting the criteria this year compared to 71 in the previous year.

Notably, the Hyundai Motor Group, encompassing the Hyundai, KIA, and Genesis brands, has once again demonstrated its commitment to safety, with a total of 12 awards across the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick categories. Specifically, Hyundai secured 5 Top Safety Pick+ awards for the Ioniq 5, Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Ioniq 6 models. Meanwhile, the luxury brand Genesis impressed with 4 Top Safety Pick+ awards for the GV60, GV70, GV70 Electrified, and GV80, as well as a Top Safety Pick award for the G90.

KIA, another group brand, also excelled with its EV9 and Telluride models achieving the Top Safety Pick+ standard. With these impressive results, the Hyundai Motor Group accounted for 25% of the total awards, outperforming other automotive groups.

In contrast, Volvo surprisingly failed to secure any awards for its 2025 production models. Additionally, none of Toyota’s SUVs this year managed to pass the IIHS’s stringent new tests.

These results highlight the challenges posed by the IIHS’s updated safety standards, even for established automakers renowned for their advanced safety technologies.

IIHS asserts, “This year’s safety awards are not about resting on past achievements. A glorious history is not enough; only those brands that keep pace with the latest safety standards will prevail.”
