Traffic cameras have long been used to detect traffic violations, but this technology has now been upgraded to do even more.

The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department (SLMPD) in Minnesota has been utilizing AI camera systems since the beginning of the year, and in February alone, it detected 10,000 violations on Highway 7, resulting in only 300 warnings or citations.

This device consists of four infrared cameras mounted on a mobile trailer, enabling it to operate day and night. Unlike traditional cameras, this AI camera system does not automatically send violation notices to offenders. Instead, when a violation is detected, it sends images of the vehicle and its license plate to the police within five seconds. The police then intercept the vehicle and pull it over to determine if a violation has occurred. If the police do not initiate a stop, the AI camera system automatically deletes the images after a few minutes. First-time offenders may be fined up to $100, and the fine can increase to $300 for repeat offenses.

In Minnesota, drivers are permitted to touch their phones once to make a call, send a text message using voice commands, or listen to a podcast, but they are not allowed to hold their phones in their hands while driving. The state’s hands-free law prohibits multiple touches, such as dialing a phone number or entering GPS coordinates. Reading emails or texts, streaming videos, playing games, and using apps for anything other than navigation is illegal.

The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department acquired this technology through a grant awarded to the Highway 7 Safety Alliance and is believed to be one of the first agencies in the nation to use AI cameras for enforcing distracted driving laws.

According to the Department of Public Safety, last year, 29 people died in Minnesota in crashes involving distracted driving, and 137 people were severely injured.
