According to Motor1, Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce a compact variant of the G-Class, as part of the German brand’s biggest product offensive to date.

In a recent press release, the luxury German automaker confirmed that the “iconic G-Class will be expanded with an entirely new, smaller variant.”

Mercedes-Benz has also referred to this variant as the “g-class,” positioning it at the bottom of the G-Class product pyramid.

This is not the first time Mercedes-Benz has mentioned a compact G-Class. Back in September 2023, they unveiled design sketches for the G-Class, which CEO Ola Källenius referred to as the “Little G” at the IAA Munich Motor Show. The CEO described this vehicle as the “offspring” of the iconic G-Class.

According to Motor1, the initial sketches didn’t reveal much about the new model, as the overall shape could have indicated a Suzuki Jimny. The automotive website even speculated that Mercedes-Benz might “copy” Suzuki’s formula and launch both three- and five-door versions of the new model.

Two years ago, Germany’s Handelsblatt revealed that the Mercedes-Benz “mini G-Class” would share chassis designs with the next-generation CLA, due to be launched next month.

If this information is accurate, the G-Class line will not feature a ladder frame chassis.

Additionally, the “mini G-Class” is likely to be developed as an all-electric vehicle, with a possible mild-hybrid option based on a 1.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine.

The Motor1 website notes that, at this time, Mercedes-Benz has bigger fish to fry, so the new g-Class will need more time before it hits the market.

In addition to the CLA, the German brand is also developing a new compact model to replace the CLA Shooting Brake, GLA/EQA, and GLB/EQB. Pure-electric versions of the C-Class, E-Class, and GLC are also in the works.

The S-Class will receive a significant update next year, and the AMG division is working on a pair of electric vehicles.
