According to Carscoops, Kia is recalling over 137,000 vehicles in the US due to potential issues with the piston oil rings, which may have been manufactured incorrectly. This could lead to a range of problems, from engine damage to the risk of fire.

The recall affects 83,621 2021-2023 Kia Soul vehicles and 53,635 2021-2023 Kia Seltos vehicles, all equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

Information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that quality deviations may lead to cylinder wall damage over time. This can result in increased oil consumption, eventually leading to engine damage or engine seizure.

NHTSA also notes that in rare cases, a fire could occur if engine oil leaks onto the hot exhaust system due to a hole in the engine block.

The faulty piston rings in this case were manufactured by Dongsuh Federal-Mogul. The Korean automaker first became aware of the issue in September 2024, after noticing a potential trend in warranty claims for replacement parts for the 2021 Seltos and Soul.

An investigation was conducted on the returned engine blocks. According to Carscoops, the disassembly process revealed damaged oil rings and scratches on the cylinder walls, with one case even showing a hole in the engine.

Kia has received reports of 409 incidents related to this issue, along with 400 reports of potential engine stalling. The company has also received reports of four potential fires, all involving Kia Soul vehicles.

As a remedy, Carscoops reports that dealers will inspect and replace the engines in affected vehicles, if necessary. Technicians will also install piston noise-sensing software to alert drivers of potential issues, expected to be available from early April.
