At the annual Kia Investor Day event held this week, the South Korean automaker unveiled a series of important development plans aimed at achieving sustainable growth in the coming period.
One of the most notable highlights at Kia‘s event was the introduction of an entirely new 2.5L gasoline engine, combining turbocharging and hybrid technologies, which is expected to play a pivotal role in the brand’s electrification strategy in the near future.
According to Kia’s brief presentation, the new 2.5L engine is designed to achieve a 5% higher thermal efficiency and 12% more power compared to current engines of the same displacement. While the current 2.5L turbocharged engine, found in vehicles such as the Kia K5 and Sorento, offers between 290 and 300 horsepower, this implies that the new engine could potentially deliver a minimum of approximately 335 horsepower, excluding any hybrid combination.
Departing from conventional hybrid powertrains, Kia intends to utilize this new engine in both standard hybrid (HEV) and range-extended (EREV) vehicles, meaning the gasoline engine will function as a generator to recharge the battery rather than providing direct propulsion. This opens up diverse application possibilities for large SUVs like the Kia Sorento and Carnival, which demand high performance, extended range, and substantial towing capacity.
In parallel with its engine development plans, Kia has set a global market share target of 4.5%, equivalent to approximately 4.19 million vehicles per year, in the upcoming period. This represents a significant leap from the current 3.63 million vehicles and necessitates substantial investments in production systems, supply chains, and global distribution infrastructure.
To materialize this goal, Kia announced that it will introduce a total of five all-new models in 2025, along with one major and three minor upgrades.
Although the brand has not disclosed the specific names of the new vehicles, one of them has been confirmed as an electrified pickup truck, targeting the North American market, where the pickup segment holds a substantial market share and is undergoing a rapid transition towards electrification.
