In a recent interview, BYD’s Executive Vice President for Global, Stella Li, made a bold statement by claiming that Denza’s new models are “ten times better” than competitors such as Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Porsche.
This ambitious statement is not without merit as the Denza Z9 GT – the first car to bear the Denza logo officially launched in Europe – carries high expectations from BYD.
Denza is an automotive brand positioned between BYD and the ultra-luxury YangWang line, designed to compete directly with European luxury car manufacturers. Previously, Denza was a joint project between BYD and Daimler (the parent company of Mercedes-Benz), but it is now solely operated and developed by BYD. With this strategic move, BYD demonstrates its determination to expand its presence in the global luxury car market.
Denza Z9 GT will be the pioneer model to introduce the Denza brand to the European market, expected to hit the roads by the end of this year. The competitors it aims to challenge are not lightweight: Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5-Series Touring, Audi A6 Avant e-tron, and BMW i5 Touring – icons in the luxurious European wagon segment.
The Z9 GT boasts a sleek, European-influenced design with a futuristic touch. Underneath its stylish exterior lies an impressive powertrain: a combination of three electric motors that deliver a maximum output of 952 horsepower. With this configuration, the Denza Z9 GT not only challenges luxury wagon rivals but also ventures into the realm of high-performance sports cars.
In addition to the all-electric version, Denza also introduced a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant that utilizes a 2.0L internal combustion engine combined with an electric system, resulting in a total output of 858 horsepower.
The Denza Z9 GT not only offers exceptional performance but also features unique technologies that, according to Stella Li, “other established brands don’t have.” One of the most intriguing features is its ability to move sideways and “crab-walk” for easier parking.
While the pricing for the European market is yet to be announced, in its home market of China, the Denza Z9 GT is priced between $45,800 and $56,800 USD (approximately 1.19 – 1.47 billion VND), whereas competing Porsche models start at $138,000 USD (around 3.58 billion VND). If Denza maintains this pricing strategy in Europe, it will certainly give the German automotive giants a run for their money.
