Skoda is testing a new seven-seat electric SUV, tentatively named “Space,” which is the commercial version of the Vision 7S concept, set to replace the gasoline-powered Kodiaq.

Despite expectations of a nearly 600-km range on a single charge and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, a big question mark remains: what is the actual range when towing a trailer?

Skoda Space is based on the MEB platform, shared by the Skoda Enyaq and VW ID.Buzz, which isn’t particularly renowned for its towing capabilities. While the Enyaq can tow up to 1,200 kg, the ID.Buzz manages a maximum of 1,800 kg, depending on the battery version. Skoda hopes the Space will be able to compete with the Kia EV9, one of the few electric vehicles with a 2,500-kg towing capacity.

The issue with electric vehicles when it comes to towing is the significant range reduction. According to MEB platform users, the range can decrease by 50-60%, even when towing a light load. If this holds true for the Space, the realistic range could be around 240 km, which is a concerning figure for those who frequently go camping or tow mobile homes.

While electric cars offer advantages like high torque and regenerative braking, their heavy weight and limited charging infrastructure make towing a trailer less convenient than with gasoline-powered cars. Additionally, not many charging stations are designed with trailers in mind, making long journeys even more challenging.

The Skoda Space is highly regarded for its technology and design, but it remains to be seen if it can completely replace gasoline cars in situations requiring substantial towing capabilities.
