According to Carscoops, Toyota dominates in terms of numbers in a recently published ranking, but not for a desirable reason. The list outlines the top ten most stolen vehicles in the Land of the Rising Sun.
The Japan Insurance Association has been collecting annual data on car theft since 2000. In their latest report for 2024, Toyota and Lexus take up all ten spots, with the Toyota Land Cruiser (including the Prado variant) being the most targeted by criminals in Japan.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the Toyota Land Cruiser and its Prado variant have topped the list of most stolen vehicles in Japan. In 2023, the theft rate associated with the Toyota Land Cruiser was 14.7%, but this figure nearly doubled to 27.5% in 2024. This means that out of every four cars stolen in Japan, more than one is a Toyota Land Cruiser.
Model | Theft Cases in Japan in 2024 | Rate (%) |
Toyota Land Cruiser | 688 | 27.5 |
Toyota Alphard | 289 | 11.6 |
Toyota Prius | 235 | 9.4 |
Lexus LX | 109 | 4.4 |
Lexus RX | 89 | 3.6 |
Toyota Crown | 62 | 2.5 |
Toyota HiAce | 43 | 1.7 |
Toyota Velfire | 38 | 1.5 |
Lexus LS | 34 | 1.4 |
Toyota Voxy | 21 | 0.8 |
The next four models in the list are the Toyota Alphard (11.6%), Toyota Prius (9.4%), Lexus LX (4.4%), and Lexus RX (3.6%). All of these models have a significantly lower theft rate compared to the Toyota Land Cruiser.
In the last spot on the list of Japan’s ten most “unlucky” cars, the Toyota Voxy was involved in 21 car theft cases in the Land of the Rising Sun last year, a far cry from the 688 incidents associated with the Toyota Land Cruiser. In 2023, Japan recorded a total of 2,499 car theft cases.
According to the Japan Insurance Association, the average insurance payout for stolen vehicles increased by about 20% to 2.815 million yen (approximately 18,700 USD).
Aichi Prefecture is named as the least safe area for cars in Japan, as more than one-fifth of all car theft cases were recorded there.
