Following its official launch in South Korea and the US, the short-wheelbase version of the Kia Sportage has now entered the testing phase.
According to leaked images on social media, it’s challenging to differentiate between the Kia Sportage long- and short-wheelbase versions from the front and rear alone, as both feature Kia’s new design language with many similar elements. However, when viewed from the side, the distinction becomes evident. The short-wheelbase version has a significantly more compact body, along with a modified side window design, omitting the quarter glass behind the C-pillar, its most recognizable feature.
Kia has not yet disclosed the exact specifications of the short-wheelbase Sportage. However, multiple sources predict that this model’s length will be similar to its smaller sibling, the Kia Seltos. If priced lower than the long-wheelbase version, the short-wheelbase Sportage could potentially dominate the same segment and even compete directly with the Seltos in certain markets.
In Vietnam, the Kia Sportage is currently offered with a long wheelbase. The mid-life upgrade for this model has not yet arrived, and the likelihood of the short-wheelbase version being introduced here is low due to product strategy differences compared to markets like Europe.
The upgraded Kia Sportage impresses with its exterior design, featuring the Starmap lighting signature inspired by the design language of the Kia EV9 electric SUV. This element not only enhances the vehicle’s aesthetics but also improves lighting performance with a constellation-inspired pattern.
The 2026 Sportage’s cabin has been refreshed with a large dual-screen setup, a more modern and intuitive interface inspired by new electric models like the EV9 and EV3. The integrated control interface seamlessly blends navigation, infotainment, and vehicle settings to enhance the user experience.
In terms of performance, the new Sportage adopts an 8-speed automatic transmission, replacing the old 7-speed dual-clutch type. Additionally, it’s equipped with a hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.6L gasoline engine, emphasizing fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly operation—a growing concern amid rising fuel prices and the automotive industry’s shift towards electrification.
