Automobile imports in the first quarter of this year surged by over 44% year-on-year, reaching nearly 46,500 units.

According to preliminary statistics from the Customs Department, in March 2025, the number of whole car imports of all kinds registered for customs declaration increased by 22.5% (corresponding to an increase of up to 3,969 units) compared to the previous month’s imports.

Specifically, the import volume of whole cars of all kinds in March 2025 reached 21,640 units, corresponding to a value of 445 million USD. Meanwhile, the Customs Department recorded 17,671 whole car imports in the previous month, valued at 378 million USD.

Imported cars surge in the first months of this year

The three main import markets are Indonesia with 8,841 units, up 28.4% over the previous month; Thailand with 7,731 units, up 15%; and China with 4,473 units, up 53.9%. Cars imported from these three markets account for 97% of the total number of cars imported into Vietnam.

Of these, cars with 9 seats or less accounted for the largest proportion, with 17,139 units imported into Vietnam with a value of 296 million USD. Thus, this type of car accounts for 79.2% of the total and increased by 26.9% (equivalent to 3,635 units) compared to the previous month.

There were only 2 cars with more than 9 seats recorded in the month, originating from China; 2,376 commercial vehicles and 2,123 specialized vehicles.

In cumulative terms, in the first quarter of 2025, the volume of whole car imports into Vietnam was 46,457 units, up a strong 44.2% over the same period last year. The two types of cars with the largest import increases were 9-seat cars or less (36,341 units, up 36.5%) and commercial vehicles (5,284 units, up 149%).

Also in March, Customs recorded 481 million USD worth of auto parts and components imported into Vietnam, up 16.8% from the previous month.

The imported goods originated mainly from China with 179 million USD; South Korea with 85.4 million USD; Thailand with 64 million USD; Japan with 49.7 million USD; India with 33.8 million USD; and Indonesia with 33.6 million USD…

In cumulative terms, in the first quarter of 2025, the import value of auto parts and components reached 1.27 billion USD, up 37.5% over the same period last year.
