The implementation of Decree 168 since the beginning of the year has brought about a more orderly and civilized traffic situation on roads and routes. This positive change can be attributed to the adjusted administrative penalties, which serve as a stronger deterrent.
Listed below are the traffic violations with the highest fines for automobile drivers according to Decree 168:
Weaving and Zigzagging
According to Decree 168, drivers who weave or zigzag their vehicles, or engage in chasing other vehicles on the road, face a fine ranging from 40 to 50 million VND.
In cases where weaving or zigzagging results in a traffic accident, the administrative fine increases to 50-60 million VND. In addition to the monetary penalty, the violator’s driving license will be revoked for a period of 3 to 5 months.

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
The use of narcotic substances, such as cannabis or other illegal drugs, while operating a vehicle is strictly prohibited in Vietnam. If a driver is found to be under the influence of any such substance while on the road, they will face a fine ranging from 40 to 50 million VND.
In the event that a driver is caught driving under the influence of prohibited substances and causes a traffic accident, the administrative fine will be increased to 50-60 million VND. Additionally, the offender’s driving license will be revoked for a period of 22 to 24 months.

Operating an automobile without a valid driver’s license, or with a fake, altered, or expired license, is considered a violation of traffic laws. According to Decree 168, offenders are subject to a fine ranging from 18 to 20 million VND, which can increase to 23-25 million VND if an accident occurs.
Running a Red Light
Running a red light falls under the category of “failure to comply with traffic light signals.” Previously, under Decree 123, which was in effect until the end of 2024, drivers who ran a red light were subject to a fine of only 4-6 million VND and did not incur any license point deductions. However, Decree 168 has adjusted the penalty for this violation to enhance its deterrence.
Automobile drivers who run a red light now face a fine ranging from 18 to 20 million VND. If running the red light results in a traffic accident, the administrative fine increases to 20-22 million VND, and the offender’s driving license will be deducted by 10 points.
