The chess set is designed to honor the fluidity of movement. The leather-clad base is curved from the center, gradually rising on both sides, reminiscent of the ”waft line” on Rolls-Royce models, giving the set a sense of serene “floating” on the table surface.

With a single gesture, the drawer containing the chess pieces slowly rises, and the board smoothly unfolds, revealing the neatly housed pieces. This movement is inspired by the effortless opening of Rolls-Royce car doors. Hidden beneath the chessboard are discreet magnets that ensure the pieces remain perfectly aligned throughout the game, providing a sense of precision and decisiveness to the player with each move. To achieve this, the design team experimented with six different types of magnets to find the optimal balance between securely holding the pieces and allowing smooth movement. A hidden drawer is discreetly placed on each side of the board, accessible with a gentle touch, housing an extra queen for when a pawn reaches the other side.

Both the board and the piece container are framed with polished aluminum edges. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy emblem, crafted from glossy aluminum, is discreetly embedded on the front and back of the chess set, showcasing the distinctive mark of Rolls-Royce.

Each chess set is meticulously handcrafted. The aluminum edging of each square is machined and then further refined by hand to achieve absolute precision at the corners – a intricate process that demands technical expertise as the thin metal is prone to bending and challenging to form perfect right angles. The wooden veneer squares are laser-cut and then meticulously placed on the board by hand. All veneer pieces within a set are crafted from the same log of wood to ensure a consistent grain pattern in the natural wood finish.

Each chess piece is crafted with a multifaceted surface, resembling miniature sculptural masterpieces. Building upon the traditional shapes, the designers elongated the stems, transforming them into square bases. Crafted from aluminum and topped with stainless steel polished to a gem-like finish, the pieces feature hidden magnets and a ceramic coating. The black pieces are finished with a subtle satin sheen, while the white pieces are coated with a subtle pearlescent luster.
