According to Carscoops, the number of vehicles winning the Top Safety Pick awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has significantly decreased this year, mainly due to stricter evaluation criteria.

Many of America’s best-selling cars, including the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Toyota RAV4, were absent from the list. Among the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the US last year, only the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic took home the Top Safety Pick award.

As of now, only 48 vehicles in the US qualify for the IIHS’s 2025 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. This is a significant drop from the 71 vehicles that made the cut in 2024.

IIHS has updated its moderate-overlap front crash test by adding a dummy seated directly behind the driver, representing a woman or a child, to collect data on potential injuries in such collisions.

To earn the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards, vehicles must achieve a “Good” rating in the small overlap front crash test, the updated side test, and an “Acceptable” or “Good” rating for their front crash prevention and headlight performance.

The sole difference between the Pick and Pick+ awards lies in the newly updated moderate-overlap front crash test. A vehicle that receives an “Acceptable” rating in this category will be granted the Top Safety Pick award, while a “Good” rating will result in the Top Safety Pick+ award.

“The increased focus on protecting rear-seat passengers seems to have eliminated many minivans and pickup trucks from the Top Safety Pick list,” remarked IIHS President, David Harkey.

Nonetheless, the list of Top Safety Pick and Pick+ winners still includes a selection of sedans, crossovers, and SUVs. The rare pickup trucks that made the cut are the Toyota Tundra and the Rivian R1T.

Some other vehicles that earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick award include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Honda Accord, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Genesis G90, Chevrolet Traverse, and the Lexus NX…
