According to CarBuzz, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just released its list of winners for the 2025 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. Only 48 vehicles sold in the US received this recognition, and Mazda emerged as the brand with the most vehicles on the list.

A total of eight Mazda models were awarded the Top Safety Pick+ rating this year.

As CarBuzz points out, the number of awarded Mazda models might be subject to debate, as the Mazda3 was counted separately for its different body styles, and the same was done for the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70, distinguishing between their gasoline and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants.

Nevertheless, IIHS conducted separate tests for each vehicle, and from a manufacturer’s perspective, these small distinctions can make a difference.

For instance, the Honda Civic hatchback earned a higher rating than its sedan counterpart. A similar situation occurred with the Rivian R1S SUV and the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck.

The following Mazda models received the Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS this year: Mazda3 hatchback, Mazda3 sedan, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, and CX-90 PHEV.

Notably absent from the list of award recipients are the Mazda CX-5 and MX-5 Miata.

The Mazda CX-5, despite its age, remains a key player in the brand’s sales performance in the US. In 2022, it sold 134,088 units in the country, accounting for 31.6% of Mazda’s total US sales, as per CarBuzz.

The only issue with the CX-5 is that its front crash prevention system has not been tested for pedestrian crash prevention. CarBuzz notes that IIHS has not yet evaluated the Mazda CX-5 in this category.

If the CX-5 were to undergo this test and achieve an “Acceptable” or “Good” rating, it would undoubtedly receive the Top Safety Pick+ award, having already met the criteria in other crashworthiness and headlight tests.

As for the Miata MX-5, CarBuzz describes it as the brand’s flagship model. It may not be the most expensive or luxurious offering, but it has become synonymous with Mazda’s fun-to-drive spirit.

According to CarBuzz, the Miata MX-5 has not received any Top Safety Pick awards from IIHS simply because the organization has not yet conducted tests on this Mazda sports car.
