As the global trend for electric SUVs continues to gain momentum, Land Rover is also joining the fray with its upcoming entry into this segment – a brand new, all-electric compact version of their iconic Defender.
This SUV is rumored to be named the Defender Sport. It has already entered the real-world testing phase and has been spotted undergoing road trials on multiple occasions.
Based on the prototype images, the Kolesa website has created detailed sketches to give users a clearer idea of the vehicle.
The front of the car features a distinctive headlight design reminiscent of the current Defender, but scaled down to fit its smaller dimensions. The traditional grille has been removed, replaced by new-style air intakes, alongside a redesigned front bumper with large air vents on both sides.
The body retains the robust style, with flared wheel arches at the front and rear. The mirror caps and pillars are painted black, creating a contrasting effect with the body, a familiar feature on recent Land Rover models.
The rear of this new SUV sports low-mounted taillights, just above the bumper, drawing comparisons to the styling of the latest Hyundai Santa Fe. The overall dimensions of the Defender Sport are also expected to be similar to the Korean SUV.
The Land Rover Defender EV compact version will be developed on the all-new EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) platform, engineered by Jaguar Land Rover. This platform will support an 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging up to 350 kW.
Additionally, the Defender Sport EV is anticipated to come standard with a four-wheel-drive system, employing a dual-motor configuration to maintain its off-road capabilities, an essential part of the Defender’s DNA.
The EMA platform will also be utilized for future models such as the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, and the next-generation Land Rover Discovery Sport.
According to plans, the Land Rover Defender Sport EV is expected to be unveiled in 2027, as a 2028 model. Analysts predict that the Defender Sport EV will be significantly more affordable than the current Defender, allowing Land Rover to attract a wider range of customers and compete more effectively in the premium mid-size electric SUV segment.
