In a recent announcement, Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schafer, revealed that the company is discontinuing its A-Class line-up. This news will come as a disappointment to fans of the hatchback design. Rumors of the A-Class’s demise had been circulating since 2022, but the company has now officially confirmed the decision.

“We need vehicles that can cater to global markets, including China and the US. I understand that hatchbacks are popular in Europe, but they don’t fit into our plans, and we have to make tough choices,” said Markus.

According to Carscoops, Mercedes-Benz’s decision to halt production of the A-Class is part of a strategy to focus on larger sedans and SUVs, which are their best-selling vehicles in the Chinese market. The German automaker has also just launched the new CLA model, offering both electric (EV) and hybrid powertrains.

The EV options include the 250+ and 350 4Matic versions. The CLA 250+ features an electric motor that delivers 268 horsepower and a maximum torque of 335 Nm. The 450 4Matic, on the other hand, is equipped with two electric motors, generating an impressive 349 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque. The vehicle has a top speed of 209 km/h.

Complementing the powerful electric motors is a battery pack ranging from 58 to 85 kWh, enabling a substantial driving range of up to 771-792 km on a single charge. The official pricing for the new CLA has not yet been announced.
