According to Car News China, the evolution of modern transportation is leading to a growing number of drivers becoming accustomed to unlocking and operating their vehicles via phone applications, rather than traditional keys.

Recently, a glitch in Great Wall Motors’ mobile apps left drivers who rely solely on their phones in a bind when trying to access their cars.

Numerous GWM vehicle owners reported issues with the company’s app, the most common being the “503 Service Unavailable” error.

The app malfunction impacted drivers who do not regularly use traditional keys, leaving them literally locked out of their vehicles.

Social media feedback indicated that the issue was not isolated to the GWM app but also affected apps from brands owned by the Great Wall Motors group, including Wey and Tank. The app crash impacted drivers in various regions across China.

Great Wall Motors subsequently issued a statement acknowledging that a server issue had impacted users of their five car brand apps, as well as the GWM app.

“Our technical team is working diligently to resolve the server issue, and functionality is gradually being restored. We recommend carrying physical keys to avoid any inconvenience due to intermittent app unavailability,” the statement read.

As of March 21st, Beijing time, Great Wall Motors announced that the app was back to normal operation after working with their cloud service provider.

Great Wall Motors is a Chinese automobile manufacturer founded in 1984. The group currently owns five major automotive brands: Haval, Wey, Ora, Tank, and Great Wall Pickup.
