Thais love their pickup trucks. Almost every popular mid-size truck model is available in Thailand, contributing significantly to the country’s automotive market. At the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS 46th), three new entrants from the populous country joined the pickup segment, expected to heat up sales competition this year.

BYD Shark 6

BYD Shark 6 was one of the most anticipated vehicles at BIMS 46th. It took center stage with two color options: orange and white. The electric pickup became a “magnet” at the BYD booth, attracting most visitors’ attention. Almost every attendee who stepped into the BYD booth first laid eyes on this “shark.”

The Shark 6 was first introduced in Mexico in April 2024, creating a wave of interest in electric pickups in the market. It then made its way to Australia in October 2024, where it caused the BYD website to crash due to a surge in traffic. The version presented at BIMS 46th features a crew cab configuration.

This pickup is equipped with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, delivering a combined output of 430 horsepower and a whopping 650 Nm of torque. For more information on the design and performance of the “shark,” click here.

Following its appearance at BIMS 46th, BYD officially opened reservations for this PHEV pickup in the Thai market, priced at approximately 1.699 million Baht, or roughly $50,000. The Shark 6 is expected to be a formidable competitor to the likes of the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Geely Riddara RD6

Chinese automotive giants are not taking the pickup truck segment lightly. This time, Geely aims to seriously conquer the Thai pickup market by introducing one of its best-selling models—the Geely Riddara RD6.

The Riddara RD6 took center stage at the Geely booth, and the brand didn’t hold back on showcasing various versions and variants of this electric pickup. They even displayed 3D seawater models to advertise the vehicle’s water-wading capabilities.

The Riddara RD6 was first launched in its home market in November 2022 under the name Radar RD6, a sub-brand of Geely specializing in pickup trucks and off-road vehicles. With its rugged design and acceleration comparable to the Tesla Cybertruck, the Riddara RD6 successfully captured 60% of the electric pickup market share in China.

However, China is not a market known for its love of pickup trucks, so Riddara’s market share doesn’t necessarily translate to high sales figures. Hence, Thailand becomes the perfect target for Geely to boost the sales of this model.

The Riddara RD6 is introduced in Thailand with two variants: RWD and AWD, priced between 899,000 and 1,299 million Baht, or USD 26,540 to 38,352. The RWD version is equipped with a single electric motor producing 268 horsepower. The AWD variant, on the other hand, features a dual-motor setup, generating a combined output of 422 horsepower.

Deepal Hunter K50

Chinese automakers didn’t just bring their popular models; they also introduced new technology with their pickups. Deepal, an electric vehicle brand under the Changan umbrella, showcased the Hunter K50 at BIMS 46th.

Although it wasn’t the main attraction, the Hunter K50 still drew attention at the show with its bold and unique design compared to other pickups on display. According to the manufacturer, the Hunter K50 is the world’s first range-extended PHEV pickup.

It combines a 31.18 kWh LFP battery with two electric motors and a 2.0L turbo gasoline engine, producing a combined output of 190 horsepower. This setup enables the truck to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and achieve a remarkable range of up to 900 km on a single charge.

One of the Hunter K50’s standout features is its range-extending REEV technology. According to Deepal, the pickup can use its gasoline engine to generate electricity if the battery runs out, or it can convert the battery power to charge external devices.

Pricing and availability details for the Hunter K50 have not been disclosed yet. Should it enter the market, it will undoubtedly be a strong competitor to the BYD Shark and Riddara RD6. With its modern and futuristic design, the Hunter K50 could also appeal to younger Thai buyers who are fond of pickups.
