According to InsideEVs, Porsche had initially stated that it would completely discontinue the gas-powered Macan. However, a new report from Autocar quotes an unnamed “senior Porsche insider” who suggests that the German sports car manufacturer may be reconsidering those plans.

The source confirms that the possibility of continuing production of the gas-powered Macan is being analyzed as part of “a range of product scenarios.”

Last year, Porsche expressed optimism about the success of the electric Macan. CEO Oliver Blume even revealed that the German carmaker was overwhelmed by the order intake for the electric SUV.

InsideEVs suggests that one of the reasons why the Macan EV isn’t selling as well as Porsche’s CEO suggested could be its pricing. The standard version of the electric Macan is priced at 75,300 USD, while the fully-optioned Turbo variant costs twice as much. In comparison, the success of the Tesla Model Y globally is partly attributed to its more accessible pricing, according to InsideEVs.

The automotive website also suggests that Porsche may have lost faith in its goal of having 80% of its sales be electric by 2030.

Additionally, InsideEVs analysis indicates that Porsche is considering installing combustion engines in its 718 sports car range, despite previously stating that the Boxster and Cayman would be fully electric. Meanwhile, the launch timing of the all-electric 718 is also unclear and will most likely not make it by 2025 as initially planned due to issues with battery suppliers.

A Porsche representative for the US confirmed that 30% of the carmaker’s global sales last year were plug-in cars (including both pure electric and plug-in hybrids), with half of those being pure electric vehicles. InsideEVs concludes that Porsche may just be considering the possibility of bringing back the gas-powered Macan.

In November 2024, Porsche’s CFO, Lutz Meschke, stated that the company was considering offering hybrid or internal combustion engine options for some of its previously planned all-electric models. “It is clear that we will stick with the internal combustion engine significantly longer,” Meschke said.

InsideEVs points out that while plug-in hybrids and range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs) were once considered transitional vehicles and were expected to be phased out quickly, customers seem to prefer these options over pure electric cars. As a result, automakers are rearranging their resources and adding these “transitional” models to their lineups.

China is also cited as a reason for Porsche and other automakers to change their strategies. Chinese customers are increasingly choosing domestic brands over foreign car manufacturers. In 2024, Porsche’s sales in China dropped by 28% compared to the previous year.
