According to Carscoops, despite President Donald Trump’s declaration of a 90-day suspension of retaliatory tariffs on various countries, the 25% import tariff specifically targeting automobiles and auto parts remains in effect.

Currently, many car brands are adopting a “wait-and-see” strategy, aware that the US President can swiftly and unexpectedly change his stance.

This has resulted in thousands of newly imported vehicles from various countries being held up at ports across the US. Some brands have even halted imports altogether to avoid unnecessary tariff payments.

Speaking to Financial Times, anonymous logistics and automotive industry leaders shared that imported cars are piling up at US ports, with some ports nearing capacity.

Brands such as Aston Martin, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover have temporarily halted vehicle shipments to the US, believing that their current inventory levels are sufficient to cater to customer demands until long-term solutions regarding tariffs are reached.

Per Carscoops, this development means automakers are exploring all avenues to circumvent the high import taxes. In addition to holding new cars at US ports, some automakers are redirecting imported vehicles to bonded warehouses, where cars can be stored without incurring taxes.

The ambiguity surrounding the new policies of the Trump administration has also caused concern. While the 25% import tariff on all automobiles took effect last week and is expected to apply to auto parts from May 3rd, the specifics remain unclear.

“Are [auto] parts defined as entire engines, or individual nuts and bolts within an engine?” a senior staff member of a German automaker shared with Financial Times.

Carscoops commented that this ambiguity could likely create challenges for US car owners needing repairs. Service centers may also encounter situations where they are unable to repair vehicles due to parts shortages.
