The Toyota RAV4 is more than just a “phenomenon”. It helped shape the modern SUV landscape and is America’s best-selling car, excluding trucks. It’s also one of the most popular vehicles globally. Now, Toyota has completely revamped this iconic model with the sixth-generation RAV4.

Toyota has taken a similar approach with the RAV4 as it did with the Camry, opting for an evolutionary rather than revolutionary redesign. The new RAV4 features a refreshed design, an upgraded platform from the previous generation, and new technology and engine options. Notably, Toyota has introduced the GR Sport variant for those seeking a sportier driving experience.

A Familiar Yet Refreshed Design

As mentioned, the Toyota RAV4 2026 doesn’t deviate drastically from its predecessor. Instead, Toyota has made subtle yet effective changes to refresh the look of the world’s second best-selling C-segment SUV.

The new RAV4 retains its familiar silhouette while incorporating more modern design elements. It offers three distinct styles: Core, Sport, and Rugged, each with its own unique versions. These include:

  • Core: Includes the LE, XLE, and Limited versions.
  • Rugged: Introduces the new Woodland version.
  • Sport: Features the SE, XSE, and GR Sport variants.

Regardless of the style, the RAV4 boasts sharper LED headlights, a body-colored grille, and larger air intakes for a sportier appearance. The distinctive trapezoidal wheel arches remain, complemented by sharper body lines. The side windows have been redesigned with straight lines, and new alloy wheel designs in 17-inch, 18-inch, or 20-inch sizes are offered, depending on the variant.

At the rear, the LED taillights now feature a continuous design, creating a sleek and modern look. The tailgate has been squared off, and the roof spoiler is more prominent. The GR Sport variant adds a subtle rear spoiler and a sportier front grille, while the Woodland version sports a two-tone grille, LED auxiliary lights in the front bumper, a large roof rack, and an increased ground clearance of 13 mm thanks to its all-terrain tires.

Toyota offers a wide range of color options for the RAV4, including both classic and new shades such as Meteor Shower Gray, Everest Green, and Storm Cloud Blue. The Woodland version features a unique Urban Rock Gray color, while the GR Sport variant boasts an exclusive Supersonic Red color with a black roof.

The overall dimensions of the RAV4 remain similar to the previous generation, with a length ranging from 4,595 to 4,618 mm, a height of 1,687 to 1,722 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,690 mm.

A Tech-Infused, Button-Reduced Interior

Inside, Toyota has struck a balance between practicality and aesthetics. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster comes as standard, paired with a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Certain high-end variants also offer a head-up display.

One notable addition is the Arene software platform, which Toyota describes as a step towards a software-defined vehicle. Arene powers the latest version of Toyota’s Audio Multimedia system, offering advanced connectivity options and integrating the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 suite for the first time in the RAV4.

The physical buttons for climate control have been replaced by a digital interface displayed on the central screen. The center console has been redesigned with two cup holders, additional storage compartments, and a small-sized shift lever on select variants. A six-speaker audio system is standard, with an option to upgrade to a premium nine-speaker JBL setup.

Toyota offers a variety of interior materials, including fabric, SofTex, and perforated Ultrasuede. Depending on the variant, unique interior accents are available, such as the all-weather floor mats and mineral-colored interior in the Woodland version, or the Gazoo Racing logo and sporty aluminum pedals in the GR Sport variant.

A Hybrid-Only Powertrain Lineup

Although referred to as a new generation, the Toyota RAV4 2026 continues to utilize the TNGA-K platform from the previous generation. However, Toyota has strengthened the chassis by reinforcing the frame joints and suspension mounting points, resulting in a stiffer body. Additionally, the use of vibration-damping adhesive helps reduce noise and vibrations.

The GR Sport variant, introduced for the first time in the US, features a stiffer chassis and suspension and steering tuned by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division. While real-world performance remains to be seen, these enhancements are promising.

The most significant change is the electrification of the entire RAV4 lineup. The conventional gasoline engine option has been discontinued, leaving only two hybrid choices: a self-charging hybrid (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Both powertrains utilize a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2026 delivers a maximum output of 226 horsepower in the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version and 236 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, representing a 17-horsepower increase over the previous generation.

Meanwhile, the Toyota RAV4 PHEV 2026, featuring standard AWD, produces a combined output of 320 horsepower, an increase of 18 horsepower. The PHEV model’s all-electric range has been extended by 8 miles, now reaching up to 50 miles. The XSE and Woodland variants offer DC fast charging via a CCS port, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

The Toyota RAV4 2026 is scheduled to arrive at US dealerships by the end of 2025. Pricing will be announced closer to its market launch.
