On May 22, 2025, a super fancy license plate number 88A-888.88 from Vinh Phuc province attracted special attention as it went up for online auction.

After 30 minutes of official bidding and 10 extensions, the license plate was sold to the highest bidder at VND 21.325 billion. According to experts, the price is considered “reasonable” given the symbolic value and uniqueness of the license plate with all 8s.

In East Asian culture, the number 8 is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The pronunciation of the number 8 (“bat”) is similar to the word “fat” in “getting rich” or “getting lucky”. Therefore, license plates with multiple 8s are often sought after by car enthusiasts.

Especially, the license plate 88A-888.88 not only has five 8s in a row but also the prefix 88 of Vinh Phuc province, creating a license plate with all 8s, a rare and powerfully auspicious combination in feng shui. This makes the license plate almost unique in Vietnam’s current automobile license plate system.

Also, on May 22, VPA organized an auction for about 16,000 car license plates nationwide. This is part of the online car license plate auction program coordinated by the Traffic Police Department since September 15, 2023.

According to statistics from the Traffic Police Department, as of May 14, 2025, more than 3.5 million license plates have been listed for auction, of which more than 85,800 license plates have been successfully auctioned. The total value of the auctioned assets reached over VND 6,000 billion, of which more than VND 5,200 billion has been paid by the winning bidders into the specialized account of the Traffic Police Department to transfer to the state budget.

The car license plate auction program not only helps to make the process of granting beautiful license plates transparent but also contributes to increasing budget revenues and creating more resources for socio-economic development goals.
