On May 28th afternoon, one of the most anticipated vehicle license plates of 2025 – 30M-999.99 – officially went up for auction in an online event hosted by Vietnam Partnership Auction Company (VPA).
After 25 minutes and ten bidding extensions, this quintuple-nine plate was sold for VND 9.44 billion. This price surprised many as it fell significantly short of earlier predictions.
Prior to the auction, enthusiasts on forums dedicated to desirable license plates anticipated that 30M-999.99 could fetch between VND 15 to 20 billion due to the prestige of having five nines, a highly valued element among collectors. However, the final price of under VND 10 billion is considered relatively modest given that this license plate is one of the most VIP offerings in Vietnam’s automobile registration system.
The conservative final price can be attributed to cautious bidder psychology, as the market for premium license plates stabilizes following a series of heated auctions earlier in the year.
While 30M-999.99 is highly regarded, the VND 9.44 billion price tag pales in comparison to the previous record. Specifically, in January 2024, another Hanoi license plate, 30K-999.99, reached an astonishing VND 75.275 billion, setting an unprecedented record in Vietnam. Even though the winning bidder later forfeited their deposit and the plate was re-auctioned in September 2024 for VND 22.37 billion, it remains a milestone unmatched by any subsequent auctions.
Also, on May 28th, VPA offered 16,000 vehicle license plates for auction. As of May 14, 2025, over 3.5 million license plates have been listed on the system, with more than 85,800 finding owners. The successful auction prices have surpassed VND 6,000 billion. According to statistics from the Traffic Police Department, the actual amount deposited into the state budget currently stands at over VND 5,200 billion.
