Starting June 1st, 2025, the new road motor vehicle test syllabus, comprising 600 questions, will officially take effect nationwide.
According to the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), the number of questions in the new syllabus remains the same at 600. However, there have been adjustments made to the content to ensure relevance, incorporating the latest legal regulations, and reflecting the practical traffic situation.
Importantly, the basic rules of traffic participation remain largely unchanged, so approaching the new syllabus will not significantly hinder learners. The changes primarily focus on clearer expressions, the addition of new knowledge, and adjustments to the question structure to mirror current traffic realities.
The new test syllabus is divided into 6 chapters, evenly covering areas that drivers need to master. Specifically: 180 questions belong to the group of general regulations and road traffic rules; 25 questions relate to traffic culture, professional ethics, fire prevention and rescue skills, and rescue knowledge; 58 questions focus on vehicle handling techniques; 37 questions test knowledge about vehicle construction and maintenance; 185 questions are for the road sign system; and 115 questions examine situation handling skills through practical models.
The clear grouping makes it more convenient for students during the revision process and supports driving centers in organizing scientific and effective teaching programs.
One of the important and timely changes in the new syllabus is the integration of content related to electric cars for the first time – a type of vehicle that is gradually gaining a larger proportion of the total vehicles in Vietnam.
The new questions focus on basic knowledge about the principles of operation, safe operation, and handling emergency situations when using electric vehicles. This move is highly appreciated and shows the proactiveness of the authorities in embracing the shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to environmentally friendly green vehicles.
To avoid disruption for students in the process of completing their test application, the Ministry of Public Security allows for the parallel application of the two syllabuses for a certain period. Specifically, students who have been trained before January 1, 2025, including those who failed, were absent, or have not yet taken the test, will continue to be allowed to take the test according to the old syllabus until August 3, 2025.
After this date, the entire driver’s license test process will be unified under the new 600-question syllabus.
This syllabus update is not just a technical change but also a significant step in modernizing the driver training and licensing system in Vietnam. The new syllabus is expected to contribute to the formation of a driving force that is not only skilled in vehicle handling but also well-versed in legal knowledge, civilized in traffic participation, and adaptable to the trend of advanced technology vehicles.
