According to Motor1, Ford is recalling over 123,000 F-150 pickup trucks and SUVs such as the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator due to a brake issue. This issue affects 2017-2018 models and can lead to reduced brake function and potential brake damage if left unchecked.

As this is a high-risk safety issue, Ford has issued a recall for 87,738 F-150s, 30,200 Expeditions, and 5,673 Navigators, all produced between 2017-2018 and equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

The problem lies in the brake master cylinder. A leak in the front circuit of the master cylinder allows brake fluid to enter the brake booster. Over time, brake performance may degrade due to the leak, eventually leading to complete brake failure once a significant amount of fluid is lost.

When this happens, drivers will experience a soft or spongy brake pedal before the braking system fails. A warning notification will also appear on the dashboard, alerting the driver to the issue.

Thus far, Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. The problem was first discovered in January by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US.

Specifically, NHTSA documentation includes a link to a survey for vehicle owners regarding potential fluid leaks in 2017 Expedition models. The issue was brought to Ford’s attention in February, leading to a two-month investigation. There has also been an increase in warranty claims for Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, but no similar trend for the F-150.

As per Motor1, Ford will replace the brake master cylinders on all affected vehicles. The automaker will also replace the brake booster if there is evidence of fluid leakage from the master cylinder. All replacement procedures will be carried out free of charge.
