The top-selling small MPV segment in Vietnam witnessed an unexpected entrant from Japan. Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Xpander continues to reign as the best-seller, with sales figures almost equaling the combined total of all its competitors.

Xpander Dominates, Honda BR-V Surprises

According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the Mitsubishi Xpander more than doubled its sales in March, reaching 2,530 units. This performance solidifies the Xpander’s leadership in the affordable MPV segment, further extending its sales gap with its rivals.

One of the most intriguing surprises in the small MPV segment this year is the second-place finish of the Honda BR-V. This 7-seater family car, imported from Indonesia, sold 629 units in the last month of the first quarter, outperforming the Toyota Veloz Cross (586 units) and the Kia Carens (320 units).

Suzuki XL7 Hybrid’s sales figures showed a promising recovery with 275 units delivered to Vietnamese customers. Although it outsold the Toyota Avanza Premio (131 units), its overall performance still trailed behind the Hyundai Stargazer, which sold 287 units in the same period.

Cumulative sales from the beginning of the year show that the Mitsubishi Xpander has sold 4,391 units, averaging over 1,463 units per month. Notably, the sales performance of this single MPV model is almost equal to the combined sales of all its competitors in the same segment.

The Honda BR-V temporarily holds the second position in the small 7-seater family car segment, with quarterly sales reaching 1,215 units. The Toyota Veloz Cross follows closely behind, with a year-to-date performance of 1,167 units.

The two Korean models, the Kia Carens and the Hyundai Stagazer, have cumulative sales of 826 units and 774 units, respectively. The only hybrid representative in the segment, the Suzuki XL7 Hybrid, experienced a challenging start to the year, with cumulative sales of 574 units. At the bottom of the sales chart is the Toyota Avanza Premio, with 243 units sold to Vietnamese customers.

Contenders in the Segment

Given the current landscape, it seems unlikely that the Toyota Veloz Cross or the Honda BR-V will be able to dethrone the Mitsubishi Xpander. The gap of over 3,000 units is significant, especially considering the consistent sales performance of the former market leader.

However, the introduction of new models targeting the MPV segment could pose a threat to the market share currently held by the Mitsubishi Xpander.

The BYD M6 (priced at 756 million VND) and the VinFast Limo Green (749 million VND) are all-electric MPVs that have recently entered the Vietnamese market. Positioned in a higher segment and priced higher than the Mitsubishi Xpander and many other small MPVs, these new electric models have the advantage of lower running costs, an area where gasoline-powered vehicles often struggle to compete.

The arrival of the MG G50 could also make the Mitsubishi Xpander cautious. MG’s gasoline-powered mid-size MPV is priced from 559 million VND, which is lower than the Mitsubishi Xpander MT (560 million VND) and comparable to other affordable MPVs in the market, including the Toyota Avanza Premio (starting at 558 million VND) and the Hyundai Stargazer (starting at 489 million VND).

According to Tri thức – Znews, some MG dealerships are offering discounts of 20-30 million VND depending on the version, despite the model’s recent launch. As a result, the MG G50 1.5 MT COM is now available for 539 million VND, while the highest-end version has been reduced from 749 million VND to 719 million VND.

In April, Mitsubishi also introduced incentives for the Xpander, applicable to both this year’s production and 2024 VIN-numbered vehicles. With a 50% support policy for registration fees and gifts such as a 360-degree camera, a rearview camera, or fuel vouchers, customers can enjoy benefits ranging from 30.5 to 55 million VND depending on the version.

Honda BR-V no longer offers registration fee support, but customers can benefit from preferential loan interest rates.

Suzuki is offering a 50% support policy for registration fees for customers purchasing the XL7 Hybrid in April. For vehicles produced in 2024, the company also offers a genuine gift package including a rear spoiler, rain guards, etc. The total value of incentives for this hybrid model, the only one in the segment, ranges from 30 to 55 million VND depending on the production year.

Thaco is offering a cash incentive of 15 million VND for all versions of the Kia Carens. After the discount, the Kia Carens has a starting price of 619 million VND, while the highest-end version is priced at 749 million VND.

Toyota, on the other hand, is offering a 50% support for registration fees and one year of body insurance for the Veloz Cross and Avanza Premio. The value of these incentives for the Veloz Cross is 32-33 million VND, while the Avanza Premio receives benefits worth 28-30 million VND.
