Once a symbol of wealth and luxury, the sedan segment in the price range of VND 1 billion
($43,000) in Vietnam is losing its market share. Despite a decline in sales, the
Toyota Camry remains unrivaled in the race for the best-selling D-segment sedan in the
country.

Is Anyone Buying D-Segment Sedans?

When the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) released its quarterly
sales report, it also revealed the list of the slowest-selling cars in the country for
the first quarter of the year.

Apart from the Toyota Camry, all other D-segment sedans, including the Honda Accord,
Kia K5, and Mazda6, were among the slowest-selling models.

From the beginning of the year, Honda has sold only 12 Accords in Vietnam. Kia K5
sold 49 units during the same period, while Mazda6 recorded sales of 52 vehicles.

The Toyota Camry is the only bright spot in the D-segment sedan category. So far this
year, Vietnamese customers have purchased a total of 437 Camrys, including 242 hybrid
models.

In the first quarter, the D-segment sedan group sold a total of 550 units in Vietnam,
with the Toyota Camry accounting for nearly 80% of those sales.

The declining sales of the Toyota Camry are indicative of the overall decline that
the VND 1-billion sedan segment is experiencing in Vietnam.

Toyota Carmy’s Sales Are Declining Year by Year

Label 2021 2022 2023 2024 Q1/2025
Units 4,205 4,471 2,429 1,333 437

In 2022, Toyota sold 4,471 Camrys in Vietnam. This number dropped by nearly half to
2,429 units in 2023 and then further declined to 1,333 units last year.

Interestingly, the group of A-segment hatchbacks in Vietnam is currently outselling
the D-segment sedans more than twofold.

Specifically, the combined sales of the Hyundai Grand i10, Toyota Wigo, and Kia
Morning reached 1,422 units, while the four D-segment sedans managed to sell only 550
units during the same period.

Limited Expectations from Chinese Cars

After a long period of dominance by Korean and Japanese brands, the D-segment sedan
market in Vietnam has recently welcomed a number of Chinese automotive brands.

BYD Seal was one of the first three electric vehicles that the Chinese automaker
introduced to the Vietnamese market in July 2024. It offers two versions: Advanced and
Performance, priced at VND 1.119 billion and VND 1.359 billion, respectively.

BYD Seal and MG7 are new Chinese entrants in the D-segment sedan market.

MG7 made its debut in late August 2024 with three versions priced at VND 738 million,
VND 898 million, and VND 1.018 billion, respectively. In October of the same year,
Aion, an electric car brand under China’s GAC Group, launched the Aion ES sedan with a
price tag of VND 788 million.

Similar to other Chinese automotive brands, the issue of brand perception remains a
significant barrier for BYD Seal, MG7, and GAC Aion ES. For electric vehicles, in
particular, the lack of public charging stations is a challenge that Chinese
automakers are currently facing in Vietnam.

Almost all Chinese automakers in Vietnam do not regularly disclose their sales data.
However, the fact that BYD Seal, MG7, and GAC Aion ES are rarely seen on the roads
suggests that their sales performance in the D-segment sedan category is not
particularly impressive.

Furthermore, the Aion electric car brand is scaling down its operations in Vietnam.
Its sole dealership in Ho Chi Minh City has transitioned to selling BYD vehicles, just
a year after Aion officially entered the Vietnamese market.

Overall, the market share of the VND 1-billion sedan segment in Vietnam is
shrinking. Vietnamese consumers are increasingly less interested in D-segment sedans,
as there are now more diverse options available in this price range, including C-segment
SUVs, mid-sized MPVs, pickup trucks, and even some D-segment SUVs.
