One of the oldest surviving Ferrari models – the 1948 166 Spyder Corsa has been auctioned off for a record-breaking £6.3 million (over 221 billion VND).
This 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa was auctioned by Broad Arrow Auctions near Lake Como, Italy.
At the auction, an anonymous collector successfully acquired this Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa for £5.3 million (186.8 billion VND). Including taxes and auction fees, the total value of the transaction reached £6.3 million (over 220 billion VND), setting a new record for the most expensive 1948 Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa sold internationally.
This Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa was manufactured in 1948. With the chassis number 004C, it is one of the nine 166 Spyder Corsas personally designed by Enzo Ferrari for both racing and civilian use. The Besana brothers, pioneering customers of the Ferrari brand, were the original owners of the car.
From 1949 to 1957, the car participated in prestigious European races such as Targa Florio and Mille Miglia, leaving a significant mark in Ferrari’s racing history.
In 1965, the car was purchased by American vintage car collector Henry Austin Clark for approximately £3,400 (119.8 million VND, at current exchange rates), a modest sum compared to the car’s actual value at the time.
After acquiring the car, Clark had it restored to the highest standards, preserving almost all original components, including the V12 engine, gearbox, chassis, and body. The car also comes with authentication from the manufacturer, confirming it as one of the first Ferrari models ever produced.
Despite receiving an offer to sell the car for £20,000 (704.9 million VND, at current exchange rates) in 1971, Clark chose to keep the car until 2015, before passing it on to another renowned Ferrari collector.
Even after seven decades, this vintage car still boasts impressive performance: a top speed of 201 km/h and acceleration from 0-96 km/h in just 6 seconds, remarkable specifications for a 1940s vehicle.
The auction of this Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa has not only created a buzz among vintage car enthusiasts but also stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the Ferrari brand – synonymous with racing history and exemplary mechanical craftsmanship in the global automotive industry.
