While the Tesla Cybertruck remains a standout in the market, a new contender has emerged from Chinese automaker GAC: the Pickup 01.

Making its debut as a concept car at the Shanghai Auto Show, the GAC Pickup 01 has now been confirmed for mass production starting in 2027. With ambitions that extend beyond the domestic market, this pickup truck will be distributed in several countries where GAC has a presence, including Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Mexico, and others. While GAC has revealed its distribution plans, the company has remained tight-lipped about the powertrain that will be featured in the Pickup 01.

The Pickup 01 boasts a futuristic, angular design that blends the styles of the Tesla Cybertruck and the GMC Hummer EV. This unique look helps it stand out among the crowd of Chinese pickup trucks. If GAC maintains this design language for the commercial version, the Pickup 01 will be an off-road-focused truck with a high ground clearance, exposed tow hooks, and distinctive wheels.

The vehicle also features two LED light bars above the windshield and cameras instead of traditional side mirrors, details often seen on premium off-road vehicles.

The GAC Pickup 01‘s cabin features a unique design: its steering wheel is mounted on a sliding bar that allows it to move from left to right, accommodating both left- and right-hand drive configurations. However, this setup is unlikely to meet safety standards for practical production.

More feasible elements that could make it to the commercial version include a super-wide infotainment screen and a modern, minimalist design aesthetic.

As a state-owned Chinese automaker, GAC has joint ventures with industry giants like Toyota and Honda and is increasingly pursuing a global strategy. The Pickup 01 is a bold move into the pickup truck segment, which is traditionally dominated by American manufacturers.

Although we have to wait until 2027 to see the final production version, the Pickup 01 is expected to be a formidable rival to the Tesla Cybertruck in terms of design, technology, and global presence.
