Volvo recently revealed more details about its upcoming mid-size electric SUV, the EX60, slated for launch in 2026.

Built on the all-new SPA3 platform, the EX60 is positioned as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz GLC EV and BMW iX3.

The standout feature of the Volvo EX60 is its adaptive seatbelt system, a world-first technology designed to enhance occupant protection in collision scenarios. According to Volvo, this system can adjust to the physical attributes of each passenger and the specific accident conditions.

Unlike traditional seatbelts that offer a fixed level of tension, the EX60’s adaptive seatbelts use data from a range of internal and external sensors, including accelerometers, radar, and cameras, to analyze collision situations in real time. The system also takes into account individual factors such as height, weight, body shape, and seating posture, adjusting the belt load accordingly to minimize injuries.

For instance, in a severe collision, a taller and larger occupant would experience a higher belt load to restrict head movement. Conversely, for smaller occupants in less severe crashes, the belt tension would be reduced to prevent potential injuries like rib fractures.

Ã…sa Haglund, Director of the Volvo Cars Safety Center, commented, “The adaptive seatbelt system is a significant milestone in Volvo’s safety innovation journey. It showcases our utilization of real-time data to protect lives and marks a substantial evolution from the three-point seatbelt invented by Volvo in 1959, a technology that has saved over a million lives globally.”

Volvo also mentioned that the system will be further refined through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, continuously enhancing the system’s processing and response to improve occupant protection.

While Volvo has not disclosed detailed specifications or pricing for the EX60 yet, the vehicle is expected to play a crucial role in the company’s comprehensive electrification strategy post-2025. With its safety technology breakthrough, the EX60 continues Volvo’s tradition of setting new standards for the global automotive industry.
