According to a recent announcement by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the domestic market consumed a total of 29,210 vehicles in May 2025, a slight decrease of 1.2% from the previous month. This included 20,014 passenger cars, 8,983 commercial vehicles, and 213 specialized vehicles. Compared to April 2025, passenger car sales decreased by 3.6%, while commercial and specialized vehicle sales increased by 4% and 6%, respectively.
Additionally, the sales of domestically assembled vehicles reached 13,800 units, a 1% decrease from the previous month. Meanwhile, the sales of completely built-up imported vehicles stood at 15,410 units, a 2% decrease.
It is important to note that the above figures do not include the sales of Hyundai Thanh Cong and VinFast. In May 2025, VinFast sold 11,496 electric vehicles, a growth of 19.8%. Hyundai Thanh Cong, on the other hand, has not yet disclosed its specific sales figures.
The slight downward trend in the domestic automobile market is evident in the list of the 10 worst-selling car models in Vietnam in May 2025. This list underwent significant changes in the past month.

10 worst-selling car models in Vietnam in May 2025 (units: vehicles)
In May 2025, the top spot on the list was not held by the usual Honda Accord. Instead, the worst-selling car model in Vietnam for that month was the Kia Morning, with only 4 units sold. This marked a significant decrease of 91.1% from the previous month.
The Kia Morning used to be a popular choice in the Vietnamese market for its A-segment. However, changing consumer preferences and the introduction of more attractive alternatives, including electric vehicles offering similar pricing, have caused this model to lose its appeal. Additionally, the lack of design and feature updates for an extended period has impacted the sales of the Kia Morning.
The Kia Morning in Vietnam is currently available in two versions: MT and X-Line.
Securing the second position is the Ford Explorer, an expected entrant on this list. During May 2025, only 10 Vietnamese consumers opted for this large SUV, reflecting a 23% decrease.
The Ford Explorer’s presence in the top 10 is unsurprising given its high price point, starting at 2.099 billion VND. Even with promotional prices of 1.999 billion VND, the vehicle remains out of reach for the majority of Vietnamese consumers. Similar to the Kia Morning, the Ford Explorer has not received design or feature updates for quite some time. Moreover, the absence of 2025-produced vehicles (identified by their VIN) further impacts the liquidity of this model in the Vietnamese market.
Ranking third is the Kia Soluto, with 14 units sold and a decrease of 75.4%. After briefly escaping the top 10 in April due to strong sales growth, the Kia Soluto has returned to the list. While it boasts one of the lowest price tags in the B-segment sedan category, the Kia Soluto faces challenges due to its design and feature disadvantages.
Toyota’s “land cruiser,” the Toyota Alphard, occupies fourth place with 14 units sold, a decrease of 33.3%. This model frequently appears in the monthly list of worst-selling vehicles in Vietnam due to its high price, ranging from 4.37 to 4.475 billion VND.
Following closely is the Kia K5, with exactly 17 units delivered to Vietnamese consumers, reflecting a decrease of 46.8%. While the Kia K5 offers a competitive price, a sporty and stylish design, and ample features, its segment (D-segment sedans) is less favored in Vietnam. Additionally, intense competition from similarly priced SUVs has contributed to the modest sales performance of the Kia K5.
Matching the sales of the Kia K5 is the Suzuki Jimny, with 17 units sold and a decrease of 32%. The Suzuki Jimny faces a challenge in appealing to Vietnamese consumers due to its high starting price of 789 million VND, which seems disproportionate to its size, comfort features, and safety specifications. Furthermore, being a fully imported model from Japan, the Suzuki Jimny faces limitations in supply.
Alongside the Alphard, two other Toyota models made it into the top 10 worst-selling vehicles in Vietnam for May 2025: the Innova and the Corolla Altis. Their respective sales figures stood at 19 and 27 units, translating to decreases of 34.4% and 3.5% from the previous month. In this top 10 list, the Innova and Corolla Altis ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.
Isuzu mu-X secured the ninth position with 32 units sold, an impressive growth rate of 146.1%. However, despite this significant increase, the actual sales volume remains low, hence its inclusion in the list of worst-selling vehicles. The recently launched upgraded version of the Isuzu mu-X, featuring improved design and specifications, is expected to boost its sales performance.
Rounding off the top 10 worst-selling vehicles in Vietnam for May 2025 is the Mitsubishi Outlander, with 34 units sold, a decrease of 29.1%. Its pricing, ranging from 825 to 950 million VND for the two available versions, fails to offer a compelling advantage over its competitors. Additionally, the Mitsubishi Outlander lags behind its rivals in terms of design and specifications, contributing to its modest sales performance.
Notably, familiar names like the Honda Accord, Mazda6, and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport were absent from the top 10 list for May 2025. This absence, however, is not due to improved sales performance but rather because none of these models recorded any sales during the month.
