After a long hiatus, Volvo officially revives the XC70 as a plug-in hybrid crossover, targeting customers not yet ready to switch to full electric vehicles.
Earlier this month, Volvo revealed the first images of the all-new XC70. Now, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released full images and specifications of the vehicle, confirming its launch in 2025 for the Chinese market.
The Volvo XC70 has an overall length of 4,815 mm, a width of 1,890 mm, a height of 1,650 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. Compared to the XC90, the new model is 137 mm shorter and has a wheelbase that is 89 mm shorter, positioning it in a lower segment and targeting customers who need a compact and agile CUV for urban use, yet spacious enough for family needs.
The new generation XC70 marks a complete design transformation. The wagon-style is replaced by a modern crossover style, bearing resemblance to the Volvo EX90 – the brand’s flagship electric SUV.
Volvo XC70 features a fully closed grille combined with an active airflow regulation system to optimize cooling and aerodynamics. The Matrix LED headlights are vertically arranged, with the distinctive “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights above. Flat door handles, aerodynamic wheels (19-21 inches), plastic body cladding, and a fixed panoramic glass roof further emphasize the new design direction.
The XC70 is equipped with an extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5L gasoline engine producing 161 horsepower with a choice of lithium iron phosphate or ternary lithium-ion battery packs.
While full performance details are yet to be disclosed, Volvo asserts that the XC70 can achieve an impressive pure electric range of up to 200 km, surpassing most PHEVs available today.
Volvo states that the XC70 is developed on the Sustainable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform and serves as a “mid-step” in the brand’s transition to electrification. For customers concerned about charging infrastructure, ownership costs, or lengthy charging times associated with EVs, the long-range PHEV like the XC70 offers a balance between green technology and practicality.
Although it is unclear if this model will be distributed in Vietnam, if it does, the XC70 promises to be a formidable competitor in the SUV PHEV segment, where brands like Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are also pushing their offerings.
