In an ambitious effort to take its Ranger lineup to new heights in terms of durability and payload capacity, Ford has unveiled a video showcasing the testing of the Ranger Super Duty prototype at the You Yangs Proving Ground in Australia. And here’s the twist: there’s no human driver behind the wheel; a specialized robot is in control.
The reason for the robot driver is that no human could endure the relentless punishment inflicted on the Ranger Super Duty. To assess its structural durability and payload capabilities, Ford subjected the vehicle to a grueling 24/7 endurance test on the Silver Creek track, which features 300 randomly arranged obstacles of various shapes and sizes to simulate extreme real-world conditions.
Loaded with a maximum payload of 4,500 kg, each lap subjected the suspension to over 2,000 oscillations. The tests targeted the durability of the engine mounts, body structure, door hinges, and other critical structural components.
Scheduled for launch in 2026, the Ranger Super Duty is the toughest and most robust iteration of the Ranger yet. It boasts a host of significant upgrades:
– A reinforced frame for enhanced rigidity
– Increased ground clearance and a wider track
– A larger fuel tank with an integrated load-weighing system
– Front and rear differential locks
– 33-inch all-terrain tires, wide fender flares, and an aggressive front bumper
– A snorkel air intake system
– An upgraded 3.0L V6 diesel engine that meets heavy-duty emissions standards
– Towing capacity of nearly 10 tons
With these improvements, the Ranger Super Duty can tow up to 4,500 kg—a full ton more than the standard Ranger. This makes it especially well-suited for markets with demanding payload and terrain requirements, such as Australia, South Africa, and the Middle East.
Despite the anticipation, Ford has confirmed that the Ranger Super Duty will not be available in North America, at least initially. It has been developed specifically for select international markets where customers require a vehicle that can function as a true heavy-duty truck while retaining the versatility of the Ranger.
The Ranger Super Duty demonstrates Ford’s commitment to investing significantly in the mid-size truck segment in international markets, where durability, towing capacity, and payload are key decision factors for consumers.
