The first Mercedes-Maybach branded SL convertible boasts a V8 engine, producing 577 horsepower from the SL63, but combined with softer engine mounts and suspension, along with luxurious interior and exterior design details. It was first unveiled in August 2024.
At that time, many car enthusiasts in Vietnam were curious to know if any local tycoons would acquire one of the world’s most luxurious convertible supercars, and what the price would be.
Nearly a year later, one of the two puzzles was solved when the price of the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram was revealed in Vietnam, starting at an estimated 18 billion VND.
This price will make the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram one of the most impressive luxury convertibles in Vietnam. The first highlight of the car is the Maybach logo, which appears everywhere, including on the front air intake and the soft top, similar to how luxury fashion brands put their names on designer bags, a very classy way of recognition. And customers can even go further by adding the Maybach emblem across the chrome-divided hood.
The Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram also features a windshield trim, lower air intakes in the front bumper, and a unique Maybach grille (of course, with lights).
The interior takes a similar approach to differentiate the Mercedes-Maybach SL from other SL models. Although the basic dashboard architecture and vertical touchscreen are the same, the instrument cluster and media display feature Maybach-specific animations and startup graphics, and the steering wheel, seats, lower dashboard, and door panels are all trimmed in crystal white Nappa leather.
While the number 680 in the name of the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram raises hopes that Mercedes has somehow squeezed the bi-turbo V12 engine from the Mercedes-Maybach S680 sedan under the hood, unfortunately, we have to inform you that it’s just a V8.
And it’s not even the 805-hp PHEV V8 from the SL63 SE Performance, but the regular 4.0-liter engine from the SL63, delivering 577 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. The power is transmitted to all four wheels through Mercedes-Benz’s conventional 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.
Mercedes-Benz doesn’t specify exactly how much heavier the SL680 is compared to the SL63. But it must be a lot because the company says it takes 4.1 seconds for the Maybach to reach 100 km/h, while the SL63 with the same engine and output does it in 3.6 seconds, and the 470-hp SL55 in 3.9 seconds. The top speed is also electronically limited to 260 km/h, down from 315 km/h for the SL63.
To make the V8 engine feel as refined as a V12, Maybach engineers made some significant changes, including installing softer engine mounts, retuning the throttle pedal characteristics, and adding an exhaust system “optimized for noise”. In this case, optimization is the opposite of what we car enthusiasts expect from a noisy sports convertible.
The Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram also offers improved sound insulation compared to the SL63 and a softer suspension. In short, it will be wetter and less fun to drive than other SLs, but these refinements will undoubtedly enhance the sense of luxury. And besides, the AMG lineup will cater to your needs if you want an SL that focuses on performance and agility.
But there’s one feature of the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram that makes it sportier than any other SL on sale: it’s a two-seater. Mercedes has returned to the 2+2 arrangement for the latest SL, a configuration not offered since the late 1980s, but the 680 has swapped the tiny rear seats for an aerodynamic cover that extends the rear floor to the front headrests.
