BYD has recently unveiled its new large-size CUV, the Sealion 8.
This is the company’s first large CUV equipped with a PHEV powertrain. The BYD Sealion 8 PHEV is offered in two variants, DM-i and DM-p, both built on the new-generation hybrid technology that BYD is aggressively developing.
Specifically, the Sealion 8 DM-i is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine, paired with an electric motor and a 19 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. With this configuration, the 7-seater CUV can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, meeting urban and long-distance driving demands.
On the other hand, the DM-p version is optimized for higher performance, featuring an additional rear-axle electric motor and a larger 35.6 kWh battery. As a result, it can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, rivaling many current high-performance electric SUVs.
Although official range figures have not been released, the Sealion 8 is expected to offer a combined range of over 1,000 km, similar to other PHEV models in BYD’s portfolio.
According to BYD, the Sealion 8 PHEV has an impressive average fuel consumption of 5.5 liters/100 km, considering it is a 7-seater CUV. Moreover, the DM-p variant can operate solely on electric power for up to 150 km, making it ideal for daily urban commutes without relying on the combustion engine.
With the introduction of the Sealion 8, BYD demonstrates its commitment to expanding its PHEV product range, not only in the domestic market but also globally. The addition of a 3-row CUV to its lineup will position the company to compete directly with Japanese and Korean rivals in the large family car segment.
In Vietnam, BYD launched the Sealion 8 electric version in April 2025. It is likely that the PHEV variant, with its fuel-efficient capabilities, will also be introduced to the market in the near future.
