According to Motor1, Nissan is undergoing a significant restructuring, having cut 20,000 jobs and closed seven factories.
Last year, the automaker incurred losses of up to USD 4.5 billion. To curb these losses, Nissan recently announced it would halt the development of several new models.
While Nissan did not disclose which models are affected, they shared that work related to “product activities before and after the 2026 fiscal year” has been suspended.
In Japan, the 2026 fiscal year runs from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. During this period, approximately 3,000 personnel from Nissan’s R&D group have been tasked with focusing on cost-cutting initiatives.
Motor1 reports that Nissan confirmed the timing of new model releases may not be delayed. The Japanese automaker aims to optimize the development process by reducing the time to launch the next generation of a model from 52 months to 37 months. Updates are also shortened to 30 months instead of 50.
Better standardization will also minimize part complexity by 70%.

In Nissan’s new era, the company will first launch a global compact crossover, along with a similarly-sized model bearing the Infiniti logo, exclusive to the US market.
Motor1 suggests that efforts to launch new vehicles while reducing costs will cause Nissan to rely more on its existing alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi. Honda remains part of Nissan’s plan but only as a partner in electric vehicle development.
All of this is conveyed under the message “Re: Nissan” – the name of the restructuring plan that the Japanese automaker is striving to implement.
