Ford is accelerating its electrification strategy in the Southeast Asian market, with plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of its urban SUV, the Territory.
This news comes from the Land Transportation Office of the Philippines (LTO), which has listed a new Ford Territory with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This indicates that the PHEV model has completed its final legal requirements before its official launch.
The Territory PHEV is not an entirely new model but is instead the international version of the Equator Sport PHEV, produced and sold in China by the JMC-Ford joint venture since the beginning of this year.
It features a 1.5L turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 218 horsepower. Notably, this SUV can run solely on electric power for up to 95 kilometers, thanks to its large-capacity lithium-ion battery pack.
By choosing the Philippines as the launch market for the Territory PHEV, Ford is strategically testing the waters in the region while laying the groundwork for expansion into neighboring countries, including Vietnam. This market is witnessing a surge in demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, especially in the urban SUV segment.
The introduction of the Territory PHEV not only expands Ford’s product portfolio but also positions it as a direct competitor to the likes of the Corolla Cross HEV, Haval H6 PHEV, and BYD Song Plus DM-i, all of which are either already available or set to enter the Vietnamese market.
