The Hyundai Accent has been a strong contender in the B-segment sedan market in Vietnam, often coming in as the second-best seller after the Toyota Vios. However, recent sales figures from April suggest that the Accent may be waving the white flag to its Japanese rivals.

Hyundai Accent and Honda City: A Tale of Two Fortunes

After a strong showing in the first quarter, the Hyundai Accent’s sales took a hit in April, dropping to 568 units. This placed it behind both the Honda City and the Toyota Vios in the monthly sales rankings. In contrast, the Honda City witnessed a surge in sales, with a 38% increase to 957 units, making it the best-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam for that month.

Sales figures for B-segment sedans in Vietnam for the last two months (Data: VAMA, TC Motor)
Brand/Model March April
Honda City 690 957
Toyota Vios 1,041 773
Hyundai Accent 1,049 568
Mazda2 389 475
Mitsubishi Attrage 273 190
Kia Soluto 20 57

The Toyota Vios also experienced a similar downturn, with sales dropping by nearly 26% compared to March. Meanwhile, the Mazda2 saw a significant increase in sales, jumping to 475 units and solidifying its position above the Mitsubishi Attrage (190 units). The Kia Soluto, which is now the slowest-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam following the departure of the Suzuki Ciaz, more than doubled its sales to 57 units in April.

Korean Cars Fall Behind

In the B-segment sedan market in Vietnam, there are only two Korean models: the Hyundai Accent and the Kia Soluto. They are up against four Japanese competitors: the Toyota Vios, Honda City, Mazda2, and Mitsubishi Attrage.

While the Kia Soluto has consistently languished at the bottom of the sales charts, the Hyundai Accent is showing signs of falling behind. With sales of just 568 units in April, the Accent’s year-to-date sales of 2,602 units pale in comparison to the Toyota Vios’ cumulative sales of 3,058 units. The Accent is also at risk of losing its second-best seller status to the Honda City, which has sold 2,958 units in the first four months of the year, outpacing the Accent by about 350 units.

The Hyundai Accent’s performance since its generation change has not met expectations. In 2023, it sold 13,538 units, falling short of the Toyota Vios’ annual sales of 14,210 units. Meanwhile, the Honda City, despite its higher price point, is outperforming the Accent, and the Toyota Vios is also benefiting from various promotions and discounts offered by the two Japanese brands early this year.

As mentioned earlier, the other Korean model, the Kia Soluto, is on its way to becoming the slowest-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam. With year-to-date sales of just 120 units, it averages a meager 30 units per month. On the other hand, the Mazda2’s diverse range of variants seems to be paying off, with its two body styles and six versions resulting in cumulative sales of 1,496 units, far surpassing the Mitsubishi Attrage’s 571 units with its three versions.

With a limited number of models and a recent downward sales trend, Korean sedans in the B-segment may find themselves further behind their Japanese competitors. In this price-sensitive segment, the frequency and scale of discounts and promotions could play a decisive role in the sales race for the remainder of 2025.
