Xiaomi has released an official statement following an incident involving its YU7 Max electric SUV, which caught fire during a media test drive at the V1 racetrack in Tianjin, China. The fire, according to the company, was caused by the immediate halt of the vehicle after a warm-up lap and a high-speed run, leaving no time for the brake pads to cool down. Xiaomi also asserted that such an occurrence is extremely rare.

The fire was attributed to the presence of organic materials in the low-metallic brake pads, which can ignite at temperatures exceeding 600°C.

The brake pads of the Xiaomi YU7 reached a temperature of 619°C.

Xiaomi also confirmed that the braking system remained functional after the incident. The test vehicle did not have the Enhanced Energy Recovery feature activated in Master Mode, which helps reduce load and prevent overheating of the braking system during racetrack driving.

As a high-performance mid-size SUV, the Xiaomi YU7 Max generates significant heat during braking on a racetrack. Xiaomi emphasized that stock vehicles should not be driven on racetracks without appropriate modifications. The company recommends that users activate Master Mode with Enhanced Energy Recovery and fully understand the vehicle’s operational limits before subjecting it to extreme conditions such as racetrack driving.

Additionally, Xiaomi provided further details about the YU7 Max’s smart EC glass, which consumes minimal electricity and defaults to a shading mode when the vehicle is turned off. Xiaomi also boasted about the YU7 Max’s superior sound insulation, achieved through the use of premium glass and top-tier sound-absorbing materials.

Xiaomi revealed that it received 240,000 reservation orders within just 18 hours of the YU7’s launch, leading to sold-out units until early 2027. With only one factory in Beijing and a second factory scheduled to begin operations in July, Xiaomi faces the challenge of balancing production between the YU7 and SU7 models. The waiting period for the Xiaomi SU7 Pro has already extended to nearly a year.

Xiaomi YU7’s High Demand: “Selling Like Hotcakes”

Addressing concerns about speculation on reservation orders, Xiaomi affirmed that these orders are non-transferable. The company has also acquired land for a third factory in China, although the timeline for its establishment has not yet been disclosed.

In the Chinese market, the Xiaomi YU7 is offered in three variants: Standard, Pro, and Max, priced between 253,000 and 329,900 Chinese yuan (approximately $38,000 to $50,000). The Standard version features a single electric motor with a maximum output of 315 horsepower and 528 Nm of torque. Equipped with a 96.3 kWh LFP battery, it offers the longest range of up to 830 kilometers (CLTC standard).

The Pro variant comes with all-wheel drive and dual motors. The rear motor is the same as the Standard version, while the front motor produces 130 kW, resulting in a combined output of 489 horsepower. The Pro shares the same battery capacity as the Standard but has a slightly reduced range of 770 kilometers.

The top-of-the-line Max version also features all-wheel drive and dual motors, delivering a combined output of 681 horsepower and 866 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.23 seconds. Equipped with a 101.7 kWh NMC battery, the Max version offers a range of 760 kilometers.

Xiaomi YU7 Variants: Standard, Pro, and Max with a Maximum Range of 830 Kilometers

All YU7 versions utilize Xiaomi’s 800V high-voltage architecture. The batteries support rapid charging at 5.2C with a maximum power of 528 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes and adding 620 kilometers of range in 15 minutes.

The Xiaomi YU7 is positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 07, Zeekr 7X, Onvo L60, and Xpeng G7 in the Chinese market.
